What is it?
  • A one-day conference for educators, parents, and concerned citizens
  • A day to explore the possibility of peace in our homes, schools, and the world
  • A day to learn how individuals can make a difference

Speakers


Colman McCarthy Director of the Center for Teaching Peace McCarthy has taught at Georgetown University, University of Maryland College Park, American University and Catholic University, and in area high schools. A former Washington Post columnist and reporter, he is the author of six books, including “I’d Rather Teach Peace.”

David J. Smith Senior Program Officer of the United States Institute of Peace Smith, a Fulbright Scholar, has taught and developed curriculum in a variety of educational settings. Early in his career, he practiced law, emphasizing family mediation.

Program

  • Choose from over 30 workshops and presentations
  • Topics for educators include Conflict management and resolution in the classroom; Developing a peace curriculum Integrating peace topics into any discipline; Case studies in war prevention
  • Topics for the general public will include Creative responses to bullying; Reflections on spirituality and peace; Community mediation; Environmental issues affecting world peace
  • A special presentation by Elie Nahimana, General Secretary of the Burundi Quaker Yearly Meeting. Nahimana is involved in the African Great Lakes Initiative, which promotes peace and reconciliation through programs in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    Scholarships are available so that all who wish to attend may do so. Because only a short time remains before the conference, people desiring a scholarship are asked to simply...
