Peace Essay Contest for students

The annual Fred B. Benjamin Peace Writing Contest is now accepting applications.

The contest is open to any Maryland middle school student.
Several winners will receive cash prizes...up to $350.

Here is the topic:

"Envision an imaginary assembly at your school attended by Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, Jane Addams and Sojourner Truth. Based on what you think they would say, what advice would you give to make your school a more peaceful place?"

FRED B. BENJAMIN PEACE WRITING CONTEST
For Maryland Middle School Students

Description: This is an annual, statewide writing contest for middle school students in Maryland focusing on the themes of peace and social justice. The contest is sponsored by Anne Arundel Peace Action, Maryland Peace Action Education Fund and Benjamin Peace Foundation.

Eligibility: All 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in public or private schools in Maryland or home-schooled students at the same grade levels are eligible to enter.

Requirements: Students must write no more than 1,200 words on the following topic:

Envision an imaginary assembly at your school attended by Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, Jane Addams and Sojourner Truth. Based on what you think they would say, what advice would you give to make your school a more peaceful place?

Entry: The entry should be double-spaced and accompanied by a separate cover sheet which includes all of these:

[] School�s name, address and phone number
[] The name of the teacher sponsor, if applicable

Personal identifying information must not appear anywhere on the entry essay.

Deadline: Entries must be postmarked no later than May 15, 2008.

Speakers: CIA analyst and Middle School Essayists

Anne Arundel Peace Action�s 25th Anniversary Celebration will be held on Friday, November 9 beginning at 7 p.m. at Annapolis Friends Meeting. Admission is free.

The featured speaker will be Ray McGovern, a retired CIA analyst and co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, an organization dedicated to exposing what it believes to be the mishandling of important intelligence by presidents and their staffs particularly to justify wars. Mr. McGovern served for more than 27 years in the CIA under seven presidents and was in charge of preparing the daily security briefings at the White House during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

The program also will include:

[] Awards to the winners of the 2007 Fred B. Benjamin Peace Writing Contest for Maryland middle school students. Each of the four winners will read an excerpt from his or her entry. This year�s topic: Do some reading about the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, the major political and spiritual leader of the independence movement in India; then write a dialogue that imagines a conversation that Gandhi might have with President Bush.

The Effects of War on Women, the Environment...

Stony Run Friends Meeting is a co-sponsor of the October 19, 2007 conference, 'The Effects of War on Women and the Environment in Israel/Palestine'. This is one of a number of public events organized by Women's Peace Exchange - a wonderful real life application of peacemaking!

Author of children's books to speak in Baltimore

The book "Four Feet, Two Sandals" was inspired by a refugee girl who asked the authors why there were no books about children like her.
When relief workers bring used clothing to the refugee camp, everyone scrambles to grab whatever they can. Ten-year-old Lina is thrilled when she finds a sandal that fits her foot perfectly, until she sees that another girl has the matching shoe.

The Harvard Corporation on Monday (April 4) announced its decision to have Harvard Management Company divest its holdings of stock in PetroChina Company Limited.
"This decision reflects deep concerns about the grievous crisis that persists in the Darfur region of Sudan and about the extensive role of PetroChina's closely affiliated parent company, China National Petroleum Corporation, as a leading partner of the Sudanese government in the production of oil in Sudan,"
